Project Description
MSV International Inc. was engaged for Design and Rehabilitation of the Kabul–Kandahar and Kandahar–Spin Boldak Highway, a strategically critical corridor forming the primary lifeline of Afghanistan’s highway network. The project involved rehabilitation and improvement of a 103 km highway section, which serves as a vital link connecting the national capital with southern Afghanistan and the international border at Spin Boldak.
The corridor plays a pivotal role in national and regional connectivity, supporting passenger movement, commercial transport and cross-border trade, while ensuring continuity of movement along Afghanistan’s most important arterial route.
MSV’s Role
MSV acted as the Design and Engineering Consultant, providing technical expertise for planning, design and rehabilitation of the highway in accordance with international standards and funding agency requirements. MSV supported the Client by delivering solutions tailored to challenging terrain, traffic conditions and operational constraints.
Scope of Services
MSV’s scope included preparation and review of engineering designs, rehabilitation strategies and construction drawings; assessment of existing pavement and structures; design of pavement strengthening, drainage and safety improvements; and technical support during implementation. The scope also covered compliance with funding agency guidelines, quality assurance requirements and applicable design standards to ensure long-term performance and durability of the corridor.
Project Importance and Impact
The Kabul–Kandahar–Spin Boldak Highway is the backbone of Afghanistan’s road network, enabling movement of people, goods and essential supplies across the country. Rehabilitation of this corridor significantly improved road condition, safety and reliability, reduced travel time and vehicle operating costs, and strengthened national integration.
By restoring and upgrading this critical highway, the project enhanced economic activity, facilitated humanitarian access, and improved trade connectivity with neighbouring countries. The project contributed to rebuilding Afghanistan’s transport infrastructure and supported long-term stability, mobility and socio-economic development in line with the objectives of international development partners.
