Infra facilities for 5 Sattelite Research Stations, Malawi

Consultancy Services for Design and supervision of infrastructure of 5 satellite research stations including of 2 conference centers, 2 guest lodges, 40 offices, 11 laboratories, 6 warehouses, roads totaling 18km and 4 irrigation infrastructure covering 95 hectares, Malawi

The Government of the Republic of Malawi through Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development (MoAIWD) has received a loan from the International Development Agency (IDA) of the World Bank for the implementation of Agricultural Productivity Programme for Southern Africa (APPSA) and intends to apply part of the proceeds of this loan towards costs for the services of a consultant to Assess, Design and Supervise Construction of Various Research Infrastructure.

The Project Development Objective is to increase the availability of improved agricultural technologies in participating countries in the SADC region. The project will be implemented in six Agriculture Research Stations in Malawi. These are Mbawa in Mzimba District, Lifuwu and Chitala in Salima District, Bvumbwe in Thyolo District and Kasinthula in Chikwawa District. The project has three main components namely; Technology Generation and Dissemination, Strengthening of Regional Centres of Leadership and Coordination and Facilitation.

Malawi, a landlocked, agrarian country, is located on the East African Rift—essentially a giant, slowly spreading crack 2,400 miles long. The rift has produced major quakes in Malawi, and across East Africa.

The main objective of this assignment is the assessment of existing infrastructure, the design of new buildings in the project sites as well as the design of all necessary civil works for the irrigation infrastructure and road projects and production of corresponding Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and the supervision the works. While this current assignment and contract is for design services, supervision services will be provided under a different assignment and contract.

The assignment will contribute to the realization of Component 2: Strengthening of RCoLs, through the design, tender processing and supervision of construction of 2 conference centres, 2 guest lodges, 40 offices, 11 laboratories, 6 warehouses, roads totalling 18km and 4 irrigation infrastructure covering 95 hectares.

The design of research stations was done keeping in view the Earth Quake prone zone of the east African rift. The foundations of the stations were designed to accommodate the seismic loads produced during an Earth Quake of Intensity 6.3 on the Richter Scale.
